These terms apply to The Membrane public website, its documentation, and the local demonstration experience. They describe the current open-source project and informational site; they are not paid hosted-service terms.
1. The site and software
The public site provides general product information and links to open-source software. The software is made available under the license included with its source code. If these terms conflict with that open-source license about use, copying, modification, or distribution of the software, the open-source license controls.
2. Local demonstration
The interactive demo runs on your own machine. It uses ephemeral keys and in-memory state, and its model and tool interactions are simulated for demonstration. It does not provide a hosted production control plane or execute the displayed tool actions against real services. Do not treat demo output as evidence about a production deployment.
3. Scope and limitations
The Membrane is a gateway. It can enforce and record only model and tool traffic that is actually routed through it. Traffic, credentials, tools, or actions that bypass the gateway are outside its coverage.
The Membrane does not guarantee security, regulatory compliance, uninterrupted operation, correct policy design, correct model behavior, or prevention of every unauthorized or harmful action. Receipts and controls are inputs to your security program, not a substitute for testing, monitoring, access controls, incident response, or professional advice.
4. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- evaluating whether the software is suitable for your use and testing it before production;
- secure deployment, operation, updates, backups, monitoring, and network configuration;
- protecting keys, credentials, tokens, and other sensitive information;
- configuring policies, models, tools, permissions, and routing correctly;
- reviewing outputs and actions where human oversight is appropriate; and
- complying with laws, contracts, licenses, and third-party terms that apply to you.
5. Acceptable use
Do not use the site or project infrastructure to break the law, harm others, gain unauthorized access, distribute malware, interfere with service availability, probe systems without permission, evade safeguards, or infringe the rights of others. Do not misrepresent your relationship with The Membrane or use the project to make deceptive security or compliance claims.
6. Third-party services and links
The site and software may link to or interoperate with third-party repositories, models, tools, APIs, and other services. Those services are operated under their own terms and privacy practices. The Membrane does not control them and is not responsible for their availability, content, security, or conduct.
7. No warranties
To the extent permitted by law, the site, documentation, demo, and software are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind. Use them at your own risk. No statement on the site is a promise that the project will detect, block, explain, or preserve evidence of every event.
8. Changes and access
The project, site, documentation, and these terms may change as the software develops. The effective date above will be updated when these terms materially change. Access to the public site may be suspended or ended, including to protect the site or respond to abuse.
9. General
If part of these terms cannot be enforced, the remaining parts continue to apply. A failure to enforce a term is not a waiver of it. These terms do not create a partnership, agency, employment, or exclusive relationship.

For questions about these terms, open a GitHub issue. Do not include secrets, personal data, vulnerability details, or other sensitive information in a public issue.
